Daria’s Heart Surgery
Daria's Story
Daria, a 9.5-year-old girl from Kherson, Ukraine, has been in urgent need of heart surgery for several years. Her family’s efforts to secure consistent medical care have been interrupted time and again due to the war. With her father actively serving in the Ukrainian army, her mother, Tetiana, has faced the difficult task of caring for both Daria and her older sister, Diana, amid ongoing bombings and a lack of stable healthcare access.
In 2024, Tetiana and her daughters finally saw a potential path forward. With support from UCAF and your donations, we began planning their trip to the United States, where Daria could receive specialized treatment. Accompanied by a translator, they embarked on their journey in September, navigating multiple flights and stops, with help from a network of volunteers. Once in the U.S., Daria was quickly evaluated by a cardiologist, who confirmed she needed surgery. Scheduled for November 21, this procedure is expected to bring life-changing improvements to Daria’s health.
From Daria’s Mother:
“At the end of October 2021, Daria began experiencing chest pain. After an ultrasound, doctors diagnosed her with Congenital Heart Disease, specifically Secondary Atrial Septal Defect. We immediately went to Kiev for further diagnosis, where we learned she would need surgery. Due to COVID, we were advised to wait until spring 2022. But in February, the war started, and our plans were put on hold as my husband joined the army. Living under occupation brought immense stress and uncertainty, and after two failed attempts, we finally escaped in May 2022, witnessing tanks threatening us on our way out. We eventually settled in Odessa, returning to Kherson in November 2023.
Recently, I spoke with my husband about re-evaluating Daria’s heart. It had been over two years since her initial diagnosis, and we felt it was time to know if surgery was still needed, especially after all she’d endured. Visiting a local cardiologist in Kherson, who was previously unaware of our situation, brought our need to light. Shortly after, UCAF reached out to offer help.
Thanks to your support, we now have hope for fixing Daria’s heart. I am deeply grateful to everyone involved—the team, the volunteers, and all who help. Knowing we’re not forgotten and that there is help for our children means the world to us. Thank you so much.”
